Men Who Stare at Goats

I seriously believe that this movie might just save Hollywood or something.

Keanu does Klaatu

Here’s the trailer for the 2008 rendition of “The Day The Earth Stood Still”.

I’m just not sure if Reeves is up to the task of playing an alien, quasi-effeminate androgenous, low-emotionally-ranged character.

They couldn’t get the rights to My Mother the Car?

I know that it has been said many times, and in many ways, but I’ve just gotta say that Hollywood is officially out of ideas. Witness Welcome Back Kotter: The Motion Picture”.

The Return of Metropolis

Futura
After eighty years of looking, film historians seem to have finally come across a complete print of Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis”. Evidently, what we have been presented with over all these years as “Metropolis” is a vastly over-simplified film, missing one quarter of its footage and much subtlety of plot.

No Word on those Dancing Penguins

Some right-wing types suggest protesting Wall-E’s treatise on overconsumption by boycotting the purchase of useless, plastic Wall-E Pixar/Disney promotional crap.

This is rather like noting your formal objection to the film “Ghandi” by joining a vegan peace collective.

Heckuva strategy there there, Sun Tzu, heckuva strategy.

Hulk is a Smash

After reading this review for The Incredible Hulk in the Guardian, I’m left with a nagging uncertainty as to how the reviewer felt about the film.

Star Wars Memories

When I was ten, a girl in my class brought a photograph of Darth Vader to school. It was the year of Star Wars, so that in itself was not unusual. The funny bit was that Darth Vader was sitting at her kitchen table. Mind you, Photoshop was still decades away and photocopies only came in black & white. I could tell that it was this Particular girl’s kitchen table because I’d been to her house for a birthday party once, when I was eight and she was my biggest crush.

Her uncle had something to do with looking after “the Traveling Suit”, a “hero level” replica of the costume worn by David Prowse in the original Star Wars film. Apparently Vader was scheduled to appear somewhere in nearby Ottawa that weekend and her uncle had dropped by with Darth for a visit.

I remember being quite jealous, but - in the end - it just made her that much cooler in my ten-year-old eyes.

Anyway…

What brought this to mind was seeing the “Growing up Star Wars” photo group on Flickr. It’s a group dedicated to 1977 – ‘85 era photography featuring people and their cool Star Wars stuff. Among the shots of masks, and toys and other things are a couple of shots of “The Suit”.

Man, I’m so jealous.

Anime Laws of Physics

Those of you who have watched any amount of anime will no doubt enjoy this extensive compilation of The Anime Laws of Physics. Although some of them aren’t actually laws of physics in the traditional sense, they are all likely to tickle the funny lobe of anyone who has watched more than a couple of Japanese cartoons.

That said, I’m sure that there are a bunch of laws that you folks can come up with that aren’t on the list…
